Your Barrel Sauna Project Starts with a Plan
The Ultimate Guide to Building a Barrel Sauna
by Johnathan Hornyak
I built my first barrel sauna for myself in 2022. At the beginning of 2025, I started working on publishing a guide to share that woodworking experience.
This English hardcover brings together planning, materials, construction and care, with 24 pages of plans included at the end.

Start with three useful questions
- How do you want to use your sauna?
- What does your proposed location need for access, privacy and upkeep?
- Which parts of the build do you want to understand before buying materials?
Put your answers on paper. Use them to guide what you need to learn next.
Understand the parts
Explore materials, shell staves, end walls and the different joinery used in the build.
Plan the process
Work through layout, workshop preparation, assembly, benches, heater and ventilation planning, and exterior finishing.
Look beyond assembly
The guide also includes maintenance, troubleshooting and 24 pages of plans.

Before buying lumber for a barrel sauna, write a one-page build brief
The moment a sauna project becomes real is often the moment you start looking at lumber. A picture becomes a list of materials, a stack of boards and a set of workshop questions. Before placing an order, give yourself one page to describe what you intend to make and what you still need to understand.
I built my first barrel sauna for myself in 2022. At the beginning of 2025, I began turning that experience into The Ultimate Guide to Building a Barrel Sauna. The guide brings planning, materials, construction and care together. This short exercise helps you arrive at those topics with a clearer picture of your own project.
1. Name the project you are actually pricing
Write one sentence beginning, “I want to build…” Add where the sauna would go, how you imagine using it and which parts you intend to make yourself. Keep a separate line for decisions you have not made.
For example: “I want to build a barrel sauna for my own backyard. I am researching the shell and end-wall construction, and I still need to establish the site and equipment requirements.” That sentence gives a supplier or collaborator much more to work with than a photograph alone.
The planning chapter is a useful starting point for bringing these choices together. Your brief gives you a place to record what becomes clearer as you read.
2. Divide the materials conversation into parts
A single heading called “wood” can hide several different questions. Start separate lines for the shell, end walls, benches, supports and exterior work. Under each heading, note the material information you already have and the information you still need.
Write down whether you are asking about raw lumber, prepared components or work you would have someone else do. Record a supplier’s description in their words, along with the date. This makes it easier to return to the same conversation as your project develops.
The guide discusses materials and the individual parts of the build. Use those sections to sharpen your questions before treating an early shopping note as a finished order.
3. Make a workshop map
On the next part of your page, list the operations you expect to do yourself. Beside each one, write one of three things: “I can do this,” “I need to learn more,” or “I need another person or service.”
That might mean separating your research into preparing parts, making joints, assembling the structure and finishing. The point is to make your current capability visible. A project becomes easier to discuss when you can identify the exact step you are unsure about.
The guide follows the woodworking process through its component and assembly chapters. Read with a pencil nearby and turn an unclear step into a question you can resolve.
4. Give the site and equipment their own space
Lumber is only one conversation in a sauna project. Keep a section for the proposed location, access to the site, equipment and connections. Record who will establish the requirements for each part and which manufacturer information or local requirements you need to consult.
You can begin with questions: What needs to be checked about this location? How will materials reach it? Which equipment decisions affect the rest of the project? Who is handling each decision?
The book includes heater and ventilation planning among its topics. Keep the questions that depend on your own site or selected equipment attached to those sections as you read.
5. Ask for information you can compare
When you begin gathering prices, use the same headings in each conversation. Note what is included, what remains undecided and the date of the information. A quote becomes more useful when you can see which part of the project it describes.
Leave room for maintenance and troubleshooting too. Ask what you will want to understand once the sauna is in use. Those subjects have their own chapters in the guide and belong in your project thinking from the start.
Your next step
Finish your page with three boxes: “Decided,” “Need to learn,” and “Next action.” Choose one next action specific enough to complete, such as clarifying a material description or reading the section that explains a component you want to make.
