A clear record of your space helps you choose a sliding door that suits the opening. Before selecting one of our nine pine door designs, prepare a simple sketch and a few photographs. These details give the workshop a useful starting point.
Separate opening size from door size
Measure the finished opening across the top, middle and bottom. Record its height in several places, starting from the finished floor. Keep every reading and label the units.
Dimensions on our pine barn door product page describe the overall door panel. They are not automatically the dimensions of the opening it will cover.
Plan the coverage
Mark where you would like the closed door’s edges to sit on your sketch. Include photographs of the trim. Confirm overlap, floor clearance and rail position against the selected hardware before settling on the finished door dimensions.
Check the full travel
Identify which way the door should slide, then measure the available wall space on that side. Note switches, outlets, baseboards, furniture and other obstacles. Include a wide photograph showing the proposed open position and the space above the opening.
For a pair of doors, show both sides of the opening and the intended meeting point. Tell us what the wall is made of and what mounting support is planned; the attachment must suit your selected hardware and site.
